だだっ広い敷地に立ったホテルは二階がなく、レセプションから部屋までまぁ歩く事歩く事。部屋番号表示を見落とし、おまけに方向音痴のワタシは、2〜3周同じところをぐるぐる回り、部屋にたどり着くまでのその行程は、まるで砂漠の中を彷徨うようであった。すっかり汗をかいてしまったので、プールで泳ごうと思ったら、水着を忘れていた。じゃあ、夕食までプールサイドでカクテルでも飲んでゆっくりくつろごうと、携帯と貴重品（旅行費用１３７万円及び全員の航空券とパスポート）を持って、再び迷いながらプールサイドへ。春の終わりなのに日差しは結構強くて、プールの水がキラキラゆらゆら…何だかいい感じ。レセプションに貴重品を預けて、さぁカクテルを注文しようと脇のバーに足を向けると、そこへいきなり雄叫びが。
そうして生徒T、S、C、D、R はワタシを取り囲み、プールサイドのぎりぎりのところまでワタシを移動させた。
「てめ〜ら止めないか。ワタシは先生なんだぞぉ〜」
「ワ〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜！！」
「ギャ〜〜〜〜〜〜〜ッ！」
彼等にプールへ引きずり込まれると思ったワタシは、カ行よりも濁音で叫んでいた。次の瞬間、ワタシは飛び込んだ彼等の水しぶきをもろにかぶり、ビショヌレになっていた。気取ってカクテルを飲むような状況ではすっかりなくなった。こんなことなら、いっそのことプールへ落としてくれれば、しばらくは服のままで泳げたのに、と半分泣きべそをかきながら、水しぶきを上げ、歓声を上げ、ついでに海パンまで空中に高く上げる生徒達を残して、ワタシは部屋に戻った。
こういう餓鬼どもとワタシはこれから３週間も命を供にしないといけないのだ、と思ったら泣けて来た。そしてそこへ極めつけの text が携帯に届いた。

Dunedin に14人無事帰ってまいりました。日本は本当に楽しかったです♪ 会いに来てくれた皆さん、ありがとう。会おうとしてくれたのにmissした皆さんごめんなさい。
しかし、この3週間よく体調も崩さず頑張って来れたものだと思います。いえ、頑張ったと言うか、自分が一番楽しんでいたような気もします。だから頭痛すら肩こりすらなかったのではないかと…。一昨夜と昨夜は爆睡しました。犬達も久しぶりの我が家に安心したのか、良く眠っておりました。そして未だに眠くて、ボケボケうだうだしています。掛かった費用の計算とか、写真の整理とか、明日の授業の準備とか（とほほ）しなくちゃならないこといっぱいあるのに．．．頭が休業しております。あんど、妙に人恋しくてたまりません。3週間も寝起きを供にすると、若干鬱陶しかったり、憎たらしかった生徒達へでも、こんな感情が生まれるんですねぇ。彼等が周りにいないのが変な感じです。ワタシハイマ独りデス。

Evening – Optional Tour: a Cultural walking tour of the fascinating Gion Entertainment District where you can still see Geisha in traditional Kimono.
Tuesday, April 18, 2006 Day 4
Today we will travel by Japan’s famous “Bullet Train” the Shinkansen to Hiroshima and explore this remarkable city, regenerated & revitalized after being destroyed by the world’s first atomic bomb strike 60 years ago.
An afternoon visit to Miyajima (literally "shrine island"). Miyajima has been celebrated as a sacred island and one of Japan's three most scenic views. It is most famous for Itsukushima Shrine which together with its large wooden torii (gate), stands in the ocean during high tide.
We will stay in a Youth Hostel for 2 nights.

Hida-Takayama is one of Japan’s most picturesque traditional towns, with narrow streets, latticed bay windows, historic shrines & temple and sloped-roof farm houses.

JR trains (including Shinkansen) to Japan’s largest & Capital City – Tokyo, where we will stay in the Tokyo International Youth Hostel – occupying the 18th and 19th floors of high-rise building, you get a panorama view of Tokyo from the window of your room.
An afternoon visit to Harajuku (young people’s town).
In the evening, experience the atmosphere of a live professional baseball game played by two teams in the pacific league.

その矢先、エイプリルフールがやって来た。私は生徒Rにメッセージを送った。
「先生は、一緒に日本に行けなくなりました。代わりに Mrs. Merriwooman (彼らの大好きな?数学の教師) 先生はとても残念です。ごめんね。皆に伝えてください。」
すると．．．
「何で、先生？」
「冗談でしょ？」
「信じらんねぇ・・・」
「号泣！！」
「校長に俺掛け合ってやる」
等々のテキストが次々に送られて来た。私はたちまち幸せになり、戸棚からスパークリングワインを取り出して、冷凍庫の中に入れた。しかし、さすがに校長にこの話を持ち出されては困るので、皆にメッセージを送った。
「今日は四月一日です。ははは」
すると・・・
「だまされた！」
「先生、俺、まじだまされたよ。ひどいよ」
「やられた。でも、面白いトリックでしたよ、先生♪」
「 先生のばかやろう！・・・くやしい！！」
「よくできました」
私は、笑いが止まらなかった。おそらく30分は笑っていたと思う。（かなり不気味）冷凍庫の中のワインがほどよく冷めた頃、携帯が静かになった。
